Wildlife Ponds Creation and Management

The creation of natural (i.e. unlined) ponds and small lakes on a field or woodland scale.

During the day we will be looking at:

  • initial site survey
  • water sources
  • design (shape, islands, margins, depths)
  • costs
  • planning permission
  • excavation
  • dams and banks
  • inflow and silt traps
  • outflow, level control and drainage
  • flooding
  • stocking with plants and fish
  • effect of predators
  • ongoing management

We will visit several ponds of differing sizes and styles during the day.
