Charcoal Making

A two-day course taking you through the whole charcoal making process

Many woods are unmanaged and produce low-grade timber.  Charcoal making is one way of utilising the lowest grade timber in order to produce a high value, environmentally friendly product.

This two-day course takes you through the whole charcoal making process using a commercial ring kiln. This is a very hands-on, practical course, expect to get dirty!

During the course you will learn about:

  • sourcing raw material
  • siting the charcoal kiln
  • lighting the charcoal kiln
  • controlling the burn
  • grading the charcoal
  • bagging the charcoal
  • marketing the product

In order to allow time for controlling the burn, day one is of longer duration and begins at 7.30am.  Day two is much shorter beginning at around 9.30am and finishing at lunch time.
